Peter Marber gave the keynote address “Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA): Rethinking Asset Allocation in the VUCA World” at HSBC’s annual conference in Las Vegas. Marber highlighted the rise of China, new investors - including ETFs, hedge funds, computer and algorithmic traders - as well as new Wall Street re-regulation that has changed the financial marketplace. “New faster investors coupled with reduced market making has created less liquid, more volatile markets than what we saw a decade ago,” Marber said. “Quantitative easing, too, has exacerbated the the hunt for yield and has created less stable market conditions.” Marber teaches at Harvard and heads emerging market investments for Loomis, Sayles & Company.

National Public Radio's Marketplace interviewed Peter Marber regarding the new program being enacted to open up China's local stock markets to foreigners. "China’s markets are [currently] somewhat protected," says Peter Marber, head of emerging markets at Loomis, Sayles & Company. "They’ve got some stocks that list themselves on the New York Stock Exchange and around the world, but it’s only a small percentage of, really, what’s listed in China. This will allow us to invest in companies that we’ve just never had access to in the past."

Peter Marber was interviewed today for the article, "Unholy EM trinity tempts investors with double digit returns." In reference to Ukraine, Argentina, and Venezuelan sovereign debt, Marber noted that these three countries had relatively high credit spreads indicating possible default. But prices, he added, had been buoyed by relatively scarce alternatives elsewhere - particularly in the US distressed and high yield space.
